Wellness Outdoor Initiative

Standing in the Gap for Student Wellness

Today’s students face unprecedented challenges to their mental, emotional, and spiritual health. At Carolina Christian School, our Wellness Outdoor Initiative is designed to provide a vital support system—helping students develop a strong identity in Christ and thrive beyond academics.

Inspired by Deuteronomy 6:4–5, our program encourages students to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Every activity and topic is rooted in this holistic approach to wellness.

What We Do Outdoors

Team Building: Activities that foster trust, cooperation, and leadership.
Outdoor Play: Daily recess and movement to support emotional regulation and social skills.
Leadership Development: Opportunities for students to grow as servant leaders in a Christ-centered environment.

How We Support Students

Through a blend of leadership development, team building activities, and outdoor play, we help students grow in every area of life:

Why Wellness Matters

Quick Facts & Statistics (2024–2025):

  • The average American child spends as few as 30 minutes in unstructured outdoor play each day.   Source
  • 1 in 6 children (ages 6–17) has a diagnosable mental health disorder each year (CDC).
  • On average, children age 8-18 in the United States spend 7 1/2 hours a day watching or using screens.   Source
  • Anxiety and depression rates have doubled in the last decade.
  • Emergency room visits for mental health crises have increased over 24% in ages 5–11.
  • School-based counseling is the most accessible form of support, yet only 50% of children with mental health issues receive care.
  • Daily recess and outdoor time support emotional regulation and resilience.
